On December 31, 2024, Fumiko Lopez, Fumiko Lopez as guardian of A.L., a minor, John Troy Pappas, and David Yacubian–Plaintiffs in Lopez et al v. Apple Inc., No. 4:19-cv-04577-JSW (N.D. Cal)–moved for preliminary approval of a $95 million class action settlement with Apple, Inc. The settlement resolves claims that Apple’s voice-activated assistant Siri violated users’ privacy by allegedly recording private and confidential conversations without consent. The lawsuit further alleged that Apple disclosed such conversations to third parties, who listened to and transcribed the audio as part of an effort improve Siri and Apple’s dictation service.
The settlement is currently pending approval before the U.S. District Judge Jeffrey S. White. If approved, users and owners Apple devices that activated Siri and experienced an unintended activation during a confidential of private conversation between September 17, 2014 to December 31, 2024, could receive a payment of up to $20 for each of five qualifying devices provided they file a claim.
