About Our Firm

History

1960

Since the 1960s

when Stephen Lowey (now Chairman Emeritus) and Richard Dannenberg founded the firm, Lowey Dannenberg has specialized in complex litigation on national and local levels. Our goal from the very beginning has been to achieve the best possible results for our clients. We hire the best and achieve the best.

Over the years

we have recovered billions of dollars in the aggregate for an impressive list of clients, including Fortune 100 companies, large institutional and private investors, leading health insurers, as well as individuals and small businesses.

2018

More than dollars

But the real value of our accomplishments is measured by more than dollars. We have achieved landmark, long-term changes in the law, policies, and practices, specifically in the areas of state securities laws, antitrust laws, and the laws affecting our healthcare clients.
We have recovered billions of dollars for
Lowey has represented both individual and institutional investors, including pension funds, hedge funds, and mutual funds in cases involving misconduct in some of the world’s largest financial markets. For example, Lowey has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for investors in LIBOR and Euribor based derivatives and currently leads the prosecution of seven benchmark rate manipulation cases.

Lowey represents some of the largest health benefits companies in the United States, including Aetna, CIGNA, Humana, and Elevance Health (formerly known as Anthem). Clients turn to us to recover overcharges for prescription drugs, other medical products or services, and liens. The firm often acts on their behalf in more routine non-contingent commercial litigation as well.

Lowey has a long history of representing whistleblowers bringing claims on behalf of the United States under the Federal False Claims Act for both financial fraud and fraud on the government. Lowey is currently litigating two complex qui tam cases involving schemes to defraud Medicare and Medicaid.

Consumers

Lowey has represented consumers harmed by deceptive trade practices in various markets, achieving significant recoveries for victims of insurance scams, false advertising schemes, and deceptive terms and conditions. Lowey is currently litigating major consumer protection class actions on behalf of iPhone purchasers and student loan borrowers allegedly harmed by deceptive trade practices.

Awards & Recognition

I note that at the end of Richard Cohen’s papers are his law firm’s resume and quotes the approval of various of my state and federal colleagues for the work of the Lowey Dannenberg Cohen & Hart firm. I will join in that chorus…claims in this case were complex, they required participation of highly skilled and specialized attorneys and all the firms involved worked with great effort to prosecute their claims and defenses efficiently and effectively.

~ Hon. Timothy S. Driscoll, N.Y. Supreme Court Justice, Nassau County

We have been delighted with the excellent legal representation and prompt attention to our concerns which we have received from Lowey Dannenberg, a firm that quickly grasped our legal and business needs and expectations. Creative fee arrangements are welcome in a budget-conscious institutional environment. The bottom line is that Lowey Dannenberg consistently delivers superb results.

~ J. Edward Neugebauer, Deputy Chief Legal Officer and Head of Litigation, Aetna, Inc.

The quality of representation is not questioned here, especially for those attorneys, principally from Lowey Dannenberg, who worked so hard to achieve this creative and, in my experience, unprecedented global settlement.

~ Hon. Colleen McMahon, United States District Judge, S.D.N.Y.

I commend the plaintiffs for the work they did in this case and for having... diligently prosecuted it. This case would have been basically an orphan, or a case that no one would have brought had Richard Cohen not brought it. You produced what appears to be a substantial result for your clients.

~ Hon. Stephen P. Lamb, Vice Chancellor, Delaware Chancery Court, New Castle County

Lowey Dannenberg has worked tirelessly to promote harmony and efficiency in this sprawling litigation...[it] has done a superb job in its role as Liaison counsel, conducting itself with professionalism and efficiency….

~ Hon. Denise L. Cote, United States District Judge, S.D.N.Y.

Giving back to the Community

Community

Lowey Dannenberg is passionate about supporting and strengthening
our communities in New York and Pennsylvania. Members of our diverse
firm encourage broad participation in community and pro bono activities.

Both attorneys and staff volunteer with local associations, serve on the
boards of nonprofit organizations, field pro bono cases, and provide
financial support to various causes.

We also mentor students in law school and high school, and those occupying clerk positions. Our community involvement extends to the following organizations:

Westchester Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk
Literacy Connections of the Hudson Valley
HFA Victory Counsel
James A. Finnegan Fellowship Foundation
Mickey’s Mile for Canine Cancer Research
Jan Karski Education Foundation

Pro Bono Work

We are committed to serving the public good and to helping those in need. One of our partners, Gerald Lawrence, has impacted real change through his pro bono work on significant legal cases. In Pennsylvania v. Hanes, 77 MAP 2013 (Pa. Supreme Court), he sought to overturn the Pennsylvania Defense of Marriage Act while representing a public official before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, appealing an order enjoining him from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Diversity & Inclusion

Lowey Dannenberg is committed to the promotion of diversity and inclusion. We firmly believe that having a diverse team of professionals has increased our ability to think critically about our clients’ issues from different perspectives; adding value to the counseling we provide.

Most recently, Lowey Dannenberg became a member of the Thirty Percent Coalition, an organization representing over $3.5 trillion in investment assets advocating for diversity in corporate boardrooms. Our attorneys are active with other diversity initiatives as well.

Our associates also stay active with diversity initiates by participating in minority-represented organizations and by assisting in planning diversity initiatives and events.
