Upstate New York unions who were fleeced by Madoff wrote Honorable Denny Chin, U.S. Circuit Judge for the Southern District of New York, in opposition to Madoff’s recent bid for early release. Lowey Dannenberg’s Barbara Hart and Thomas Skelton who represented the Unions in their claims against Madoff worked with the Unions to fight Madoff’s leniency request. Reciting their agonizing experiences and the fraud’s continuing impact the Unions urged Judge Chin to “recall the thought process that went into [the] decision to sentence Mr. Madoff to 150 years in the first instance.”
Barbara Hart, Lowey’s President who, along with Partner Thomas Skelton recovered $219 million for upstate New York trade unions who had lost their pensions in the Madoff Ponzi scheme, provided a comment for an article on the funds’ opposition published on February 28, 2020 in The Chief. Ms. Hart stated that Mr. Madoff “should not be able to con his way out “of what was a just sentence,” and that “[c]lemency for Madoff would be insulting to the people whose suffering he caused.”
